Our first book for the new school year will be Searching for God Knows What by Donald Miller. Be looking in your boxes/office for your copy sometime soon.
To get some conversation flowing this summer, comment with your answers to any of the following questions:
What have you been reading lately?
If you had to make a top 5 list of your favorite books, what would make the list?
How about top 5 authors?
Got a comment about anyone else's top 5?
More updates to come. Feel free to leave comments/suggestions!
Our new book will be The Shack by William P. Young. It can be bought at Wal-Mart for a decent price. You may also want to Suz about buying it. Suzanne chose this book so she will also choose the exact date we will meet in November and the place and time of the meeting.
Here are some things that were said about Same Kind of Different as Me and also some quotes and what not for further reflection. Please feel more than free to make comments and keep the conversation going!
The book presents a challenge
We are conditioned to not give homeless people money, yet there was that incredible story about the woman who gave a homeless man 20 dollars and how it changed his whole life
We get into the rut of what can I do, what seeds can I plant and we forget about God's part
Wendy said something about the shock of the reality that this really happened to someone--there was still a form slavery during our lifetime.
When we help someone in need it shouldn't stop there -- we should pray over them
Hard to serve people sometimes because of bad experiences
Theme of judgment is seen throughout book
Comparisons can be made to the movie Crash
One thing Denver said was (this is a total paraphrase)"Whatever happend to me, let it be. I am who I am today because of it. Now I can get back down in the pit and help others by letting them stand on my shoulders."
There is power prayer--Denver's allnighters with God
Debbie tells Dever, "You are not a bad man, you are a good man."
Just to be clear---please comment back to one of these posts letting me know if you want to be in the book club. Our first meeting will be on September 9th. First we will attend the presentation the authors are giving in Hart Auditorium at 7 p.m. When it is over we will go out for coffee to have our own discussion. If you can't make this meeting but still want to be in it for future meetings, still sign up now. Thanks. If you have any questions, just see me or leave a note in my box.
Welcome to the official blog for our book club! I know I personally have never been in a book club before, and I am so pumped to finally be a part of one! This blog will function as an extension of our club. Conversations cut short at club meetings can be continued here. As time goes on, I am sure we will find many ways to utilize this blog.
I have tentatively named the blog after our favorite piece of paper work: the PAF. Personnel Analyzing Fiction (we can analyze non-fiction, too) is not a name that has to stay, so if anyone has another idea, please feel free to let me know. I can even post a poll on the blog here and we can vote if we get a few good suggestions.
Below I have listed some things we will discuss our first meeting.During our first meeting we will also discuss our first book, so I’m providing these questions now so when we meet, we can expedite the process of setting things up.
·Who will lead the book club meetings?
·Will it be the same person every time, or the person who suggested the book?
·Is there a price limit to the books we'll be reading? Paperbacks only, for instance?
·Who will keep a record of all the books read, when they were discussed, and who suggested them?
·Where will meetings be held? In the same location, at the home of that meeting's leader, or in a community room somewhere else, like a library?
·Will refreshments be served? (I vote yes!)
·How will we choose the list of books we will read?
And, I know this is common sense but I have to say it: Be sure to not post any spoiler's on here--we'll all be reading at different paces so be careful to not give away any big moments of the books!
If you guys just comment back to this post letting me know if you have a blogger account and would like to be added as an author for this blog, I can take care of that. It's very easy to set up a blogger account, so if you don't have one you can totally set one up in just a few minutes. If you have questions, come see me in HR!
